Rick Steves' 'snapshot Berlin':
" enthusiastic historian who grew up behind the Wall..."

before and after

about me

Born in Communist East Germany, I saw revolution happen in 1989 when I was a teenager. Before that life-changing event, I had already wanted to study history, a choice that would have been an impossible one back then, since kids of Lutheran ministers in East Germany hardly ever got access to higher education. What a privilege today to see my kids growing up with all the opportunities in life!

Back in 1989, I took advantage of the new freedoms after the fall of the Berlin Wall, went to school in England, and finally came to Berlin to study history. The Nazi and East German dictatorships have always been my focus, and for my graduate work at Humboldt University, I wrote my thesis about East Berlin in the 1950s. Today I hold a masters degree in modern German history. I started guiding people on tours ten years ago, and throughout this time I said to myself: “This is what I want to do.” I love history, I love Berlin, and I find it a fascinating experience to meet people from all over the world. After years of successful work for different travel companies, I decided to set up my own website.

So I look forward to meeting you in Berlin!
