If you have more time, you can visit the German History Museum or the Topography of Terror. Located next to one of the longest remaining segments of the Berlin Wall, by Checkpoint Charlie, the latter is a free museum and archive devoted to understanding Nazism and its victims. The Topography of Terror is located on the grounds of the SS’ main security office, the headquarters of the Gestapo, and other infamous organizations, such as the Einsatzgruppen death squads. However, I didn’t enjoy the bus tours of the major cities. It was frustrating to rush past places we wanted to stop and explore. I would have preferred to see fewer sights and only a few highlights in these cities.
The bus was clean and comfortable. Derek made sure everyone had a chance sit in the front and chat with others. We were very happy to choose Gate 1 for our first trip to Switzerland. Our knowledge of Switzerland was limited prior to the trip. Now, we have an understanding of the Swiss culture which can only be experienced with a knowledgeable guide. Our tour guide Otmar’s profound knowledge/understanding of the country extended beyond the typical tourist sights.
The Grimm Brothers Museum had to do more with their German dictionary than their compilation of fairy tales and was of no interest to anyone who was not German. Our tour director and all the local guides were positive. They were all extremely knowledgeable and good. Another observation: The Holocaust was a significant defining event in modern German History. The Holocaust Memorial or the Jewish Museum or both should have been included on the tour. Enjoy a 4.5-hour guided bike tour through Potsdam’s picturesque university town.
